Levels of Meaning

This evening I am drinking coffee out of my Super Mario Mug I bought from Hobby Lobby. In almost all Super Mario games there are numerous levels and hidden levels. Other than Mario Kart my favorite Mario game is “Super Mario World” on the Super Nintendo. In that game there were hidden levels called “Star Worlds”. Even within the Star Worlds there were levels called, “Special Levels”. In fact, there were multiple hidden levels all throughout “Super Mario World”. However, in every Mario Game there is one goal: to win. Most of the time, but not always, winning came in the form of defeating a final boss: Bowser.

Over the years I have found with in Biblical interpretation there are multiple ways and methods to interpret the Word of God that do not contradict each other; furthermore, these different methods only enhance our understanding of what the Biblical authors and editors were wanting to convey. These methods of interpretation include but are not limited to: the Canonical Method, the Historical-Grammatical Method, interpreting in light of the Ancient Near Eastern Context, and interpreting in light of the Deuteronomy 32 worldview. We can find more meaning that is already present in passages that seem so clear if only we search a little deeper into the text.

However, what is the primary end game message of the Word of God? “Super Mario World” had an end game over all goal. The princess had been kidnapped, and Mario, or Luigi, was given the task of saving her. All the special worlds and all the little adventures culminated in winning the game. So, we look to see what all these stories, psalms, letters, books, commandments, blessings, and cursing’s are all about. They all point and culminate in the person and work of Jesus Christ. The entirety of Scripture is about Christ!! I love to research, read, and investigate “new to me” ideas, passages, and theologies. Yet above all my sole aim and purpose in studying the Scripture is to see how the Word of God points to Jesus Christ.

I hope you liked the mug!!
